    Dear Jill:

issue of Our one hundred most famous poets, by the Famous Poet Society.
I’ve also written pieces for city officials. I write under the pseudo name of
Augustus Clayton. One of my pieces was awarded a gold medal this year.

    Dear Paul,
I am leaving your post up for now, but this Web site really isn’t a place for personal solicitations. It is a place for discussion about different aspects of the writing life.

So if I remove the post, I want you to understand why.

I self published a children’s book and it is being well received – lots of great feedback, many events and readings, 14 five star reviews on Amazon (and it has only been out for two months) which is great. Some people have brought it in to schools and some day care locations and schools have bought them for all the classrooms. I was told that the message is so good that I should bring it to Scholastic and when I called them they said they are interested in it but need it to be pitched by a Literary Agent – they don’t even talk to authors. Does it make sense to try to find a literary agent for my book? Can I even do that since it is already self published – I was told I could but this is all new to me and very confusing. If I can, would I present it like a regular query? The book is being promoted as a book on bullying but it really is so much more than that with timeless messages about kindness, acceptance, seeing the best in others and paying it forward. Thank you for this article…if you know the answers to my questions….I greatly appreciate it… thank you so much for your time.

Michelle, thanks so much for your thoughtful questions. Your book sounds wonderful. If Scholastic says it wants to hear from a literary agent, I would pay attention to that. It would seem to me that an agent would be interested to see your success so far, and might very well want to represent you, since a new contract would mean more money for you both, and higher visibility for your story.

And many publishers prefer to do all the details of contracts, copyright, etc. with an experience literary agent.

If you want ideas on how to find agents, there are a couple of books out there that should give you guidance.

This is the most helpful article I have found on this topic to date. You know, high school professors want to encourage their students to write, and college professors want to help you become better at your craft. Grad school professors want you to become a master of written language. But no one seems to want to give any pointers on how to actually break into making a job out of your writing. I have asked several professors and mentors about finding an agent and getting published, and every time I’ve gotten completely useless, vague soundbites about perseverance and honing my craft. Thank goodness for the internet.

    Liza,

I do recommend reading some books out there on getting an agent (Michael Larsen’s is a find one to start with–http://www.amazon.com/How-Literary-Agent-Michael-Larsen/dp/1402205600).

Agents often speak at writers conferences or at one-day events hosted by writers groups and membership organization. Keep your eyes peeled.

If you can gather a handful of writers similar to you, sometimes you can even invite an agent to come to lunch to talk to all of you. When agents know you are serious, they can be quite friendly and helpful.
